Promoting Competency-Based Education
STIAfrica advocates a competence and skill-based curriculum as opposed to a teacher centred knowledge-based curriculum. The STIAfrica learner-centered approach is aimed at developing learner autonomy and independence with a major focus on practices that enable lifelong learning and independent problem-solving skills among young people in Africa.
To achieve this, STIAfrica team of experienced teachers, innovators and consultants develop teaching and learning materials that are activity-based, learner-centered, and relate to the daily life experiences of the learners for them to easily grasp and understand scientific concepts.
Conventional approaches to Education in Africa have been characterised by talk and chalk, voluminous notes for learners, cram work, memorisation and focus on passing tests and examinations; this, as opposed to hands on, problem solving and application of knowledge.
As a result, learning becomes stressful to both learners and teachers, and this is especially apparent with science subjects, where the strain of teaching/learning is manifested through;
- Nerve-racking study until late in the night and waking up early in for preps and morning study
- Lack of interest in learning
- Consistent failures in Science Subjects.
- Examination Malpractices and,
- Corporal punishment
- among others
STIAfrica aims at promoting practical teaching of science and other subjects. Our teaching and learning materials are activity-based, learner-centered, and relate to the daily life experiences of the learners to easily grasp and understand concepts. The learner-centered approach aims at developing learner autonomy and independence with a major focus on skills development and practice that enables lifelong learning and independent problem-solving.
