Education Minister Janet Museveni has commissioned primary school science kits, which are hoped to complement government efforts to boost science education in lower schools.

The kits, which were launched by the minister at Nakasero State Lodge, entail mostly illustrative crafts that can simply integrated science learning in primary schools.

The Minister said the mini labs idea was conceived in response to the lack of proper science training tools in schools around the country.

“This apparatus, which is aligned with the national curriculum, is intended to make the teaching of every topic of science at the primary level not only practical but also interesting to learners” she said.

“Many primary schools today lack labs and necessary equipment needed for practical learning and appreciation of science. As such, many teachers teach science theoretically which makes learners resort to cramming.

“So, the ministry had to find a solution to this which led to introduction of the mini laboratory,” she said.

Mrs Museveni said the labs will “provide a firm foundation for transition of learners from primary to secondary.”

The labs, she added, will be procured in a phased manner depending on availability of resources.

Meanwhile, the minister also received textbooks worth 800 million shillings donated by Uganda Publishers Association for distribution to schools.

“I thank the publishers for honoring their pledge to support the education recovery efforts after the Covid-19 lockdown and closure of schools. I appeal to the primary school head teachers not to keep the books in the cupboards but to use them to improve learning achievements. may Primary schools lack labs,” she said.”
